A huge new mural celebrating Exeter's history and culture in taking shape on New Bridge Street.

Urban street artist and designer Szabotage is currently creating the showstopping artwork on the side of a building at the entrance to the city centre.

The colourful and bold design will draw the attention of shoppers heading into town. It is inspired by Exeter's long history, its famous landmarks and events.

Szabotage, real name Gustav Szabo, is a prolific contemporary British artist. He was chosen from a shortlist of five other artists by InExeter, which is the city's business improvement team.

The artist is currently working, spray can in hand, on scaffolding high above street level. He said: "It’s my highest, and definitely hottest, UK project so far."

He told Devon Live the team is about half way through the work and the spectacular mural will be unveiled in two or three weeks.

"It should give an uplift to the whole area," he said. "It's a key location and we are honoured to be chosen.

"The design was inspired by lots of people's suggestions about Exeter's history and heritage. I can say there are landmarks like the cathedral in the artwork, Custom House - lots of references to the area, new and old."

One interesting the feature of the wall is a buttress which projects out. Szabotage has utilised it in the design. The result will be piercing eyes looking out in three different directions..

It is hoped the mural will become an iconic feature for the city. For many years the area was synonymous with the 60ft high West Gate Festival mural.

That scene of street celebration greeted drivers, cyclists and walkers making their way from Exe Bridges. It was removed in 2014.

The new mural is on a different building a little further up New Bridge Street.

Szabotage has a 'lifelong obsession' with the spray can, he says, which has shaped a creative practice that spans street art, studio work, and digital projects.

His work combined intricate layered stencils with humour, wordplay, and pop culture references, his pieces are instantly recognisable and can be found on city walls, in galleries, and in private collections around the world.

InExeter says: "We’re working with local street artist Szabotage, to transform a well-known wall on New Bridge Street, creating a warm welcome as you head towards Fore Street. The piece will celebrate Exeter ’s heritage, bringing together icons and stories inspired by the West Quarter."
